Frequently Asked Questions about Proof Reading:

  1. Are all your editors native English speakers?

We only use editors who have learned English as their first language. All of our editors have extensive editing experience and many have multiple degrees related to English. In addition, you can specify whether you’d prefer British or American English.

  1. How long does it take to proofread a document?

Editing times vary depending on the length of the document. For specifics, please contact us.

  1. How do I perform a word count in my document?

In Microsoft Word, you will find the word count tool by first clicking ‘File’ from the main menu. Then, you can see ‘Word Count’ or ‘Words’ under ‘Properties’.

  1. Why do I need a proofreader?

Daily life requires a lot of writing, and often that’s the only outlet you’ll have to make a good impression on consumers, employers, followers, investors, even peers. People can (and will) tell a lot about you and your organization by your grammar, spelling, and style. Everyone makes mistakes, but by getting a fresh set of eyes to spot those errors and polish your word choice and sentence structure, you can actively put your best face forward.

  1. What’s the difference between editing and proofreading?

In our case, there’s a fine line. Proofreading, in book publishing, comes after a round or two of copyediting. Copyediting is generally a deeper look at content and broader elements like sentence structure, word choice, and the logic and flow of the work as a whole. After these changes are made, the proofreader makes sure there are no lingering typesetting errors, misspelled words, grammar glitches, or layout problems before publication.

Neels Edit thinks of these terms a little more interchangeably. We will look at the big issues like content flow and sentence structure, but along the way we’ll also fix all the little mistakes and make suggestions about word choice and style. If a piece of writing needs what amounts to a major rewrite, we’ll make our suggestions and comments and let the writer know that in our opinion, there’s still work to be done.

  1. Can I see a sample of your work?

This is a big decision. To prove we’re up to the task, we’ll give the Neels Edit treatment to a 300-word sample of your document for free and e-mail it back to you. If you’re happy with our work, place your order, and we’ll work our magic.

  1. Do you offer same-day turnaround?

If your document has 1000 words or fewer, it‘s very likely we can get it back to you the same day. But you are requested to make sure if we can accommodate you.

But if this is an important requirement for you, let us know. We‘ll do our best to get you what you need.

  1. Will my writing still seem like mine?

Absolutely. We apply certain rules and standards of clean, clear writing, but we’re also very flexible and have good instincts when it comes to keeping a writer’s voice intact.

What’s more, sprucing up your word choice, restructuring sentences, and fixing mistakes will actually put your ideas in the spotlight, freeing them from all those little things that can pull focus and distract your readers.

  1. What are your credentials?

Our editors have many years of experience among them.

  1. What if I’m not happy with your work?

We take our job very seriously and do all we can to improve your writing and catch mistakes, so if you’re not satisfied, please let us know what we did wrong. We’ll gladly fix it for free.

  1. What document formats do you accept?

We prefer Microsoft Word documents because the Track Changes feature is very flexible and easy to read, but we’re also happy to work with PDFs.

  1. How do I determine the word count of a PDF or website?

You can simply copy and paste the text into a Word document, or use an online tool like www.felix-cat.com/tools/wordcount (accepts several different file formats) or www.webwordcount.com (accepts URLs specifically for finding the word count of a website).

  1. Do you use software to do the proofreading?

No, we use real, live HUMAN experts. Our proofreaders are tested, experienced proofreaders. You’ll come to trust their judgment more and more as you see the work they do for you.

  1. What does it cost to have you proofread my documents?

Our prices are based upon level of service, turnaround time requested and number of pages.

  1. I’m a lawyer. My clients value their privacy. I don’t want you knowing their names. How can I send you personal legal documents, such as wills, trust documents, and the like?

Simple! Lawyers send us such documents all the time, and they simply replace proper names with XXXXXXX. It’s an easy thing, then, to FIND all the XXXXXXX strings in the returned document, and replace them with the client’s name.

  1. How do I know when a document is ready for me to retrieve?

Neels Edit sends you an e-mail message when your document is ready.

  1. How can I be sure my document remains confidential?

Our proofreaders are screened and trustworthy. They take a very impersonal approach to reading your document, very much the same way your doctor examines you from a medical point of view. The contents of your document are forgotten as soon as the proofreader goes on to the next document (and our fleet of proofreaders processes thousands of documents daily). Furthermore, our proofreaders are sworn to secrecy, and bound by our very strict confidentiality agreement. You have our word on that.
